Carl Spector – “To Educate and Advocate”
I have found over the past 29 years that one of the most important aspects of practicing criminal law in the area of DUI and DWI is to empower your client. The best way to do empower is to educate. The defense of driving while intoxicated case or driving while impaired case is complex. These cases are full of constitutional issues, observational issues, procedural issues, scientific issues and emotional issues.
I have been known to say that an educated client is a “good” client. The level of communication between me and my clients’ is essential to build confidence and decision making.
While spending 6 years as a Prosecutor (Assistant District Attorney) in Bronx County, New York I learned the essentials of advocacy. How to become an effective advocate, how to prepare and cross-examine witnesses. Essentially how to become a trial lawyer. Becoming a trial lawyer is a life-time skill. I continually learn new ways to effectively hone these abilities to better serve my clients.
After 6 years as a prosecutor in Bronx County, New York I opened up a private criminal defense law firm in New York and New Jersey. Along with another former prosecutor from the Bronx County District Attorneys office we defended thousands for client from 1992-2012.
Since 2012 I remain an active criminal defense attorney in New York and New Jersey. The bulk of my practice is the defense of DUI and DWI cases.
While actively engaged in my New York criminal defense practice I was offered and accepted the position as the Municipal Prosecutor in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. I remained the Prosecutor for three years, prosecuting hundreds of DWI cases.
While practicing law full time, during the past 10 years I have served as an Adjunct University Professor teaching undergraduate classes such as Crime and Criminal Behavior, Ethics and Leadership and Criminal Justice.
I have co-authored a New York Continuing Legal Education book and seminar in the area of criminal law that I taught along with my co-author on several occasions including several seminars sponsored by Lorman Education Services in New York City and Albany, New York. We also participated in The New York City Bar, Bridge the Gap continuing legal education course teaching to attorneys.
I remain committed to my clients, committed to the ideals of the constitution and committed to the modern practice of law.
